1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional wrestling has long been an important cultural and sporting activity in various parts of Nigeria, with Hadejia Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State being one of the key regions where this practice is not only a form of entertainment but also a cultural heritage. Wrestling competitions in Hadejia, often celebrated during cultural festivals, play a role in promoting local unity, preserving heritage, and enhancing community identity. However, despite its significance, traditional wrestling faces challenges, such as limited media coverage, insufficient promotion, and dwindling interest among the younger generation. Photography, with its ability to capture dynamic moments and evoke emotions, has the potential to revitalize the tradition by documenting and promoting wrestling events. By visually narrating the stories of athletes, their training, and the competitions themselves, photography can help attract attention, enhance public appreciation, and contribute to the sustainability of traditional wrestling in Hadejia. This study examines the role of photography in promoting traditional wrestling competitions and enhancing the visibility and cultural value of this practice.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural importance of traditional wrestling in Hadejia, the competition struggles with underrepresentation in mainstream media. The lack of effective visual documentation, which could draw attention from both local and national audiences, hinders the promotion and sustainability of this age-old tradition. Photography, as an engaging visual medium, can contribute significantly to highlighting the excitement, heritage, and social significance of traditional wrestling. However, its potential has not been fully explored in promoting these competitions. This study aims to explore how photography can be utilized to promote traditional wrestling in Hadejia, attracting interest from younger generations and securing the continuity of the practice.
